Editors’ Notes

After the celebrated release of its Welsh Music Prize–nominated debut, The Big Roar, the dream-pop trio The Joy Formidable delivers this cool companion EP The Big More. It opens with the catchy cut “Cradle,” where Ritzy Bryan’s Fender Stratocaster drives the tune like a juggernaut of distortion as she animatedly sings over a rhythm section trying to keep up. Fang Island follows with a remix of “Cradle” that sounds as if the New York band snuck into The Joy Formidable’s recording studio, swiped the song’s masters, and took them back to their Brooklyn sound laboratory where weird beats, UFO-sounding synths, backward guitars, and other crazy noises were added to the mix. “Anemone” downshifts into a smoldering song where gauzy guitar ambience accompanies Bryan’s Björk-esque inflections. The song’s last minute offers a surprise explosion of pummeling chords that ring and chime over an orbiting bass and drum kit to make for a panoramic sound. Fans of the band’s stage performances are sure to delight in a live version of “Whirring” before “It’s Over” closes like Siouxsie Sioux gone shoegazer.

Not quite big, not quite more

Being that I'm such a big fan of TJF, I can't give this any less than 4 stars, but if it were almost any other band, it would recieve a lower rating. Based on the title, one would expect a continuation on The Big Roar, but instead, we were given a track that was already on A Balloon Called Moaning as well as The Big Roar, a so-so remix of the same song, one pretty great song that should have been on The Big Roar, a really good live performance of Whirring (but it's still a live track), and a Roy Orbison cover. It's not a bad EP, but it's just not what it could have and should have been. This band is great, but there are better releases than this. I was personally hoping for something that I hadn't heard before and they failed to deliver that. But at the end of it, it's still The Joy Formidable and they're still one of my favorite bands ever.

Good addition for fans

Buy at The Joy Formidable official website webshop for this EP. There the digital songs are 320 Kbps. Here at iTunes are 256 Kbps

Lets see.

1. Cradle - great song (rating 9/10)
2. Cradle (Fang Island remix) (rating 7/10)
3. Anemone - a gem where you can't get but this EP (rating 8/10)
4. Whirring (Live) - Amazing! How can you get sick of this song?! You can't! (rating 10/10)
5. It's Over - Roy Orbison cover song and TJF are great doing it (rating 8/10)

So what is negative about this EP? There hardly is any. Don't read any of the other negative comments here. If you are a fan this is a buy most definitely.

Whirring (Live)

Bought the album just for this one track. Best 5 bucks ever spent.

After spending several years with the post-punk outfit Sidecar Kisses, vocalist/guitarist Ritzy Bryan and bassist Rhydian Dafydd left the lineup and launched the Joy Formidable, drawing heavily from shoegaze and noisy alt-rock to create their new group's sound. Formed in North Wales in 2007, the band later resettled in London, where original drummer Justin Stahley was replaced by Matt Thomas. The Joy Formidable began building a buzz in 2008, making appearances at several British festivals and earning...
