iTunes Review

This Boston-bred quartet built an impressive cult following in its heyday thanks to such power pop gems as “She’s Fetching” and “Meet the Witch.” On this album, founding members Bill Goffrier, Gary Waleik, and Jeff Oliphant (together with ‘90s-era bassist Tom Brewitt) revisit old obsessions and offer timely social commentary while tapping into the jangle-guitar magic that distinguished Big Dipper from the start. As before, the band combines playfully personal lyrics with a sure grasp of classic rock riffage, tempered with spiky, angular arrangements. The moods here range from the wry homage of “Robert Pollard” (a tribute to Guided by Voices’ frontman) to the wistful longing of “Forget the Chef” and the oddball seductiveness of “Hurricane Bill.” Cheeky, satiric sendups like “Lord Scrumptious” and “Market Scare” are balanced with heart-tugging tunes like “Sarah and Monica” and galloping obscurities like “Joke Outfit.” As an ensemble, Big Dipper displays an easy musical chemistry that hasn’t diminished with the decades. This is a reunion definitely worth repeating.

Addictive listening!

I bought this thing one night and listened to it. There were things I liked about it, but I didn't quite grasp the whole thing. The next morning I had charming melodies bouncing in my head that I couldn't pinpoint ... it couldn't be, could it? After one listen? It sure was. These songs got stuck in my brain after one listen! Perfectly crafted songs that demand repeated listening! Crashes on the Platinum Planet is a classic album. Addictive sunny day anthems from Big Dipper!!!

A great band that never quite fulfilled their enormous potential, Boston's Big Dipper had impeccable indie credentials and an excellent line in crunchy post-post-punk guitar pop, but their later albums were no match for their early work. Big Dipper was formed in 1985 when guitarist Gary Waleik and bassist Steve Michener left the original lineup of Volcano Suns, which they'd formed with drummer and vocalist Peter Prescott after the breakup of Prescott's earlier band Mission of Burma. Both uncomfortable...
