Album Review

Sarah Vaughan had complete control over the production of this album, Crazy and Mixed Up (which would be her last small-group recording) and, even if the results are not all that unique, her voice is often in near-miraculous form. With fine backup work from pianist Roland Hanna, guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Harold Jones, Sassy sounds in prime form, on such songs as "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," "Autumn Leaves," "The Island" and "You Are Too Beautiful." It is hard to believe, listening to her still-powerful voice on this CD reissue, that she had already been a recording artist for 48 years.

A Must Buy Album!

Sarah's voice is very fascinating. In this cd we can see many beautiful songs. I Prefer the the title---In Love or in Vain. Conclusively ,this is a very hard-swing. I wish every one can enjoy it.

BEST JAZZ CD EVER

there is not a jazz cd more stunning, more beautiful, more powerful or more graceful than this. a stunning piece of music.

The Greatest of the Greatest

Sarah Vaughan was one of the greatest jazz singers of all time, and this album is the culmination of a lifetime of artistic achievement and maturity. The intimacy and grace, control and fire in her voice, backed up by the consummate work of a solid combo makes this a must-have for lovers of female jazz singers. This album is the equivalent of a mature masterpiece of a skilled sculpture. Everything that needs to be there is there, with nothing extra added on.

It also doesn't hurt that it includes the most erotic song ever recorded, "The Island". Even if the album wasn't half as good as it is, it is noteworthy for that song alone.

Possessor of one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century, Sarah Vaughan ranked with Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday in the very top echelon of female jazz singers. She often gave the impression that with her wide range, perfectly controlled vibrato, and wide expressive abilities, she could do anything she wanted with her voice. Although not all of her many recordings are essential (give Vaughan a weak song and she might strangle it to death), Sarah Vaughan's legacy as a performer and a...
