Album Review

It may have taken four albums, but country rap star Colt Ford has made the charts with Chicken and Biscuits. Ford's new recording doesn't differ all that much from the rest of the titles in his catalog, but that's a good thing. His blend of extremely rowdy, outlaw country music, party-down backwoods lyrics, and hard beats, combined with his considerable skill as a rapper, make this set both memorable and more often than not hilarious. That said, Ford avoids the "novelty" tag altogether — his songwriting is top-notch, catchy, and downright smart. High points on this record include some of its duets — "Tool Timer" with Darryl Worley and "Country Kids" with Rachel Farley — as well as the stomping, banjo- and-beat-driven first single, "Hey Y'all," that sounds like Montgomery Gentry at their wildest meeting Redman in a Brooklyn honky tonk.

Killer Album

Ladies and gentlemen, this is it. This is an album I've been hearing about for a while now, and seeing how it lives up to the hype, I'm sure we will continue to hear about for some time to come. I've seen Colt Ford on the charts for several months, and this album lets me know why. This is an entire album full of catchy songs, some funny stories and others real tales of country life, all brought together by the witty lyrics and great flow of Colt Ford. I was skeptical of his style at first, but Colt has really won me over. Can't wait to see where this album goes.

The reason Colt Ford's blend of country and rap feels so natural has everything to do with his background, both professional and personal. Just like his closest "hick-hop" competition, Cowboy Troy, Colt grew up listening to country -- his first concert was Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton -- along with R&B and hip-hop. When the Georgia native reached adulthood he began writing songs, eventually earning co-writing credits with Jamey Johnson, Jeremy Popoff, and the alternative rock band Lit. After a few...
