Editors’ Notes

In the second decade of the 21st century, it's surprising that an artist this polished and professional didn’t arrive via a music-related reality show. Instead, Zsuzsanna Eva Ward—a.k.a. ZZ Ward—grew up in the Pacific Northwest, spending rainy days indoors with her father’s blues albums and her brother’s hip-hop collections. She started singing in her dad’s blues band at age 12 before joining various hip-hop acts in her teenage years. Jump to 2012, and she's released a debut album that solidly reflects her musical upbringing. The opening title track on Til the Casket Drops pulses with a seductive and gritty urban rhythm; Ward sings like a tougher Fiona Apple over a flowing blend of rootsy string arrangements set to a tight mix of heavy beats. “Put the Gun Down” is equally dramatic but noticeably more blues-inspired, save for the earworm chorus in which Ward’s powerful voice comes with barbed pop hooks. “Blue Eyes Blind” is sung so soulfully that during the more intense moments it’s hard not to imagine a young Amy Winehouse.

the next big thing

one part adele, one part amy winehouse, one part grace potter yet still with a style still all her own, this girl is gonna be the next big thing!

Everything about this project is BEAUTIFUL!

I just discovered ZZ Ward a few weeks back when reverbnation suggested a competition to open for her...she's a beautiful woman, has a hauntingly beautiful voice, beautiful lyrics...the list goes on.

The track that I first heard, and got me hooked, was ''Put The Gun Down". So far, this is my favorite song on the album. Another great track is the title track. It's haunting and incorporates all sorts of styles...definitely a blues/sould vibe, with a gothic twist. I found the electronic beats a little strange, but interesting in songs such as "Blue Eyes Blind". All in all, it actually gives it a more unique vibe with the use of generic beat looping (not saying the beats are generic, just the electronic sounds used). Home is catchy, but not my favorite by any means.

I would do a song-by-song review...but this is really an album that you need to digest on your own.

To me, ZZ Ward is a breath of fresh air in the industry...she reminds me of Adele in a way, with a deep south blues vibe. I really hope that her debut album helps boost her fame. She deserves a lot more recogniztion than she's receiving. Here's to a great album and hopefully a happy and long-lived musical career!

A fantastic album

ZZ Ward is something special and this album really does a fantastic job of showcasing it. Whether it's the sexy Charlie Ain't Home, the hip hop fusion on Cryin Wolf with Kendrick Lamar, the sadness in Last Love Song or the radio friendly 365 Days, ZZ has shaped an album here that is honestly one of the best this year and should be received as such. I fell in love with ZZ's music after hearing her mixtape and then her EP, but this brings things to a completely new level. Yes, there are elements of Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill, Adele and even some Bonnie Raitt at play but Ward's voice, hip hop fusion and writing style in general are truly all her own. From Lil Darlin to If I Could Be Her and back to the title track, this album doesn't have a weak song on it. It's a top class release from one of music's best new artists. I'm excited to see the heights the Til the Casket Drops LP reaches over time as it has the makings of a true classic. Thank you ZZ Ward for being original and doing things your own way. Great stuff!
