Editors’ Notes

“Dude (Looks Like a Lady),” “Love in an Elevator” and “Eat the Rich” were conceived as fusions of strutting ‘70s rock and mainstream polish. “Cryin’,” “Amazing,” and “Crazy” are arguably the last great hard-rock power ballads, but the award for most unusual and inventive hair metal hit must go to “Janie’s Got a Gun.” “Deuces Are Wild,” perfectly captures the sweet-and-ragged spirit that defined Aerosmith in the early ‘90s.

They're big and they're in your face

This album can go both ways. If you're an Aerosmith fan of just the 70s this album isn't for you. If you're an Aerosmith fan of just the 80s and after then this is for you. If you're a fan of both then this is for you to a degree. I happen to be a fan of both. This is all of the stuff from when they were with Geffen. Only Done With Mirrors has no songs on here. The best of the hard rock songs on this album is Elevator, Dude, Eat the Rich, and The Other Side. In fact these are the only hard rock tracks for the most part. Walk on Water to me is not that great of a track. The rest are ballads or some social stuff. The best of those are Jainie, Amazing, Angel, and What it takes. The rest are all right. The 70s fans would like the harder stuff better and the 80s and after fans would like the softer stuff better. Both kind of fans would like most with the exception of Walk on Water, Deuces are Wild, and Blind Man.

Aerosmith were one of the most popular hard rock bands of the '70s, setting the style and sound of hard rock and heavy metal for the next two decades with their raunchy, bluesy swagger. The Boston-based quintet found the middle ground between the menace of the Rolling Stones and the campy, sleazy flamboyance of the New York Dolls, developing a lean, dirty riff-oriented boogie that was loose and swinging and as hard as a diamond. In the meantime, they developed a prototype for power ballads with...
