Mario was only 15 when he recorded his debut album, and now with Go! we are starting to get a sense for what kind of artist he’ll grow up to be. As his young R&B peers edge closer to hip-hop in both attitude and content, Mario is more interested in making mature R&B in the tradition of Brian McKnight and Keith Sweat, who co-produced (with Teddy Riley) the simmering “Right and a Wrong Way.” That isn’t to say that Mario is for the old folks; Go! brings a crew of current hitmakers on board for support. Though the Akon-produced “Do Right” feels too much like an Akon song, and the Neptunes contribution “Go” sounds like it was tailored for Usher, the dazzling Polow Da Don production “Crying Out For Me” offers a crawling beat over which Mario showcases his sensitive side. Rich Boy shows up for the dizzying “Kryptonite,” and Juelz Santana appears on “Let Me Watch,” which is a little too sleazy for its own good. Mario sounds most like himself on songs like “How Do I Breathe,” in which he plays a love-stricken guy pining over the loss of his woman. The singer might do well to leave the sex songs and club hits to his contemporaries; whether he knows it or not, he’s growing into a sensitive soul man.

Mario-Go

Having suffered numerous delays, Mario finally delivers Go. Originally scheduled to be released November 28th, 2006, Mario intends to bring a more serious, sexual and mature Mario. Go: Production has some slight similarities to Jay-Z's "Anything" which was also produced by The Neptunes, begins the album. Uptempo and building, it is exciting, fast moving a nice way for Mario to start the album. One of the album's highlights, it is definitely a good track that features a confident Mario. 4/5 Crying Out For Me: Polow Da Don has some excellent production here, light guitar strings and relaxing mood, allow Mario to sing his heart out. Beautifully done, Mario's lovely hook and pain stricken voice makes this track a great single. 4.5/5 Skippin: Main drum pattern and synths, let Mario sing freely. A feel good light hearted track, the concept isn't bad either, about how his heart is "skipping" and a catchy hook. 3.5/5 Music For Love: Booming bass with strings make this midtempo. Mario's hook isn't bad, but lyrically the soul and heart in the singing sounds great. Supposedly the next single, its another solid track. 3.5/5 Kryptonite: With a nice concept of him being superman and the ladies being his kryptonite, Mario's hook is very good. Piano keys and dramatic bass with claps are nicely crafted by Warren "Oak" Fielder as Mario does his thing. Rich Boy's explicit lyrics and verse is completely out of place and would have made this track better off without it. 4/5 How Do I Breathe: I have to say, Stargate's keys touch your heart. The production is so warm and musically nice, that Mario simply has to blend with the production. Unlike Stargate's typical guitar strumming formula, they switch it up and this ends up being one of Mario's biggest hits, as well as Stargate's. Mario glides over the track with ease and it is one of the best on the album. 5/5 No Definition: Decent Timbaland production, Mario handles it well, singing with some honest lyrics that relate to many. Its a solid track. 3.5/5 Why: Solid synths and hi hat filled production, Mario continues to sing from the heart. The hook really captures youand shows a lot of growth and maturity from Mario. 3.5/5 Lay In My Bed: Slow rolling to get a much deeper and rich sound, it doesn't quite work to full potential but is decent, nonetheless. 3.5/5 Right And A Wrong Way: A soft ballad, its just mellow and relaxing that shows some solid singing from Mario. Its a sexy love track that is sure to please couples. 3.5/5 Let Me Watch: Mr. Collipark creates a bass booming and eerie flute line throughout, as Mario seems slightly out of place. He tries to blend his singing and make it work, but just sounds a little out of place and not nearly as club catchy as "Boom". Juelz Santana guest stars with a decent verse "you be the ground, I'll be the casket, we can go 6 feet deep". 3/5 Do Right: Akon produces yet another inspirational and feel good track, with a touching hook and reflective lyrics from Mario. He sings about his mom and the track is truly wonderful, ending the album on a very positive note. 4/5 What Is It Gonna Be: Good bonus that features some smooth production and definitely a worthy bonus. 3.5/5 Mario's third offering Go, was well worth the wait. Although he struggled with release dates and sales will likely be less due to heavy bootlegging, Mario stays strong and delivers another album that is hands down his best yet. It's a little better, a little more polished, and with better production contribution than his previous album, Turning Point. The maturity and vocal strength are shown here, as not one track is bad or weak. We'll start with the bad, "Let Me Watch" is the only complaint, a club cut that doesn't seem to fit, with Juelz decent appearance and a club Collipark beat. "Go" is an uptempo starter that is a highlight, but the true tracks are the first two singles, "Crying Out For Me" & "How Do I Breathe" both featuring excellent singing and musicality. "Kryptonie" is a solid track that would have done better without the Rich Boy verse, "Skippin" has a nice concept, "Right And A Wrong Way" is a solid ballad and "Do Right" is downright inspirational. The album as a whole flows nicely and the missteps are kept to a minimum, as Mario continues his growth and creating strong records, Usher lookout. Rating 8.5 out of 10

Underrated

As a vocalist, Mario has always been underrated. It's impossible to group him in with the batch of young R&B studio-production singers because this kid can blow. The production on the album is clean, if not too glossy/cliche at times....However, that doesn't hide this crooner's ability to find his voice (something he's been doing more with each successive album).

Finally!

I am so glad that they finally put the CD out and didn't postpone the date yet again!! This album embodies Mario's distinct vocal style and is full of passion and emotion. I am happy he didn't go mainstream and jump on the T-Pain electronic voice wagon! As always, Mario's keeping it real.
