Album Review

Don Cavalli's second album is a classic blend of moments of interest in a framework that just doesn't quite hold the interest. Within the framework of a fairly standard electric blues set, turns such as the repeated "how how how" on "Aggression" signal Cavalli's best gift, an ability to lock into a key moment and make it work in an almost obsessive fashion. But on the flip side, the fact that it is a standard electric blues performance means that there won't be much to captivate a listener who isn't already in love with that sound. Cryland isn't a disaster by any means — well-recorded, enthusiastic sounding songs are always a treat — but it's in the end pleasant, not striking.

Best of 2008

This is so instantly likeable. At once classic and fresh. Every song stuck in my head. I'm a convert

Don't listen to the Itunes reviewer! This record is over his head. It's the beautiful simplicity and understatement mixed with different forms of American roots music that make this record so cool. Cavalli goes to Tony Joe White land with the funk wha-wha blues of "Gloom Uprising", then over to Studio One Jamaican Deep Soul with "Wandering Wanderer", then to some far-out East Indian beat poet freak-out on "New Hollywood Babylon", and a super raw Cajun Soul song with "Vengeance". Throughout the album Cavalli often dips into the Country-Soul and North Mississippi Blues river with an amazing knack for doing so in a fresh way. This is a beautiful record. Highly recommended!

Fantastic. Enjoyable.

A fantastic album reflecting elements deep blues and enigmatic indie rock.

His full-length Cryland, which featured his amalgamation...
