Twistification

Twistification

The Last Royals are vocalist/keyboardist/guitarist Eric James and drummer Mason Ingram. Their debut, Twistification, fuses indie rock and electronic pop with keyboard hooks and taut guitar; the songs are catchy and melodic with impressive variety. Twistification starts with a brief, moving ballad and then launches into “Friday Night,” an infectious track with a driving dance beat and beefy bass line. “Good Day Radio” is an earworm anthem. “Always, to Belong” is a mid-tempo standout, while “Wake Up” and “Crystal Vases” are driven by electric guitar and big sing-along choruses. The album ends in a mellow, introspective mood with the acoustic ballad “I Hate California” and the dynamic and sprawling “Barefoot Winter Waltz.” The lyrics are generally somber and reflective, yet the overall feel is upbeat and light. Twistification is a highly enjoyable debut.
