Album Review

Vintage death metal seemed to come rocketing back from the dead — seemingly out of nowhere — circa the early 21st century, as evidenced by such releases as the 2006 debut by Death Breath, Stinking Up the Night. Although singer Nicke Andersson has been spotted most recently doing the Motor City garage rock revival thang as the frontman for the Hellacopters, you can't forget that he has unmistakable extreme metal roots, as a one-time member of both Nihilist and Entombed. And that's exactly where he pulls out his influences with Death Breath. Frantic riffing, growls, and rapid-fire riffing abound here — especially on such tracks as "Chopping Spree" and "Heading for Decapitation," while the beginning of "Coffins of the Unembalmed Dead" (how about that for a title?) is vintage Sabbath. Also stopping by this death metal fiesta are such party guests as Jörgen Knot Sandström of Grave and Scott Carlson of Repulsion. Stinking Up the Night could be mistaken for an '80s-era extreme metal album, and that was undoubtedly Andersson's goal.

Customer Reviews

Solid album

Raw, old-school and heavy as all hell. You won't hear any keyboards or any breaks on this album. Thrashes from track one through ten. Definately recommended for fans of Entombed (naturally, since it's the brainchild of Nicke Anderson.) No garage rock here though, just a great, no nonsense metal album.

old school still rules

With old school death metal making a comeback few bands emerge on top. This is one of those bands. Posers will hate this.

Serious Death Rip-off!

This disc iz cool but there are 2 many riffs & arrangements stolen from Death's classic "Scream Bloody Gore". Most kids in the scene r too young to be aware of this but one listen to Death's "Torn To Pieces" & you will clearly hear the EXACT same riffs, tempo changes & even the vocal arrangements have been pilfered. There's nothing wrong with taking inspiration from other bands but it's not cool 2 just swipe whole chunks of other peoples' music. Especially when Chuck life ended so tragically.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active:

Inspired by Albert Mudrian's book Choosing Death: The Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore, Hellacopters frontman and former Entombed drummer Nicke Andersson formed Death Breath in 2005 as a tribute to old-school Swedish death metal. In contrast to its more technical American counterpart, early-'90s Swedish death metal featured filthy tones and simple, bluesy riffs. Andersson's return to this sound is a homecoming of sorts, as...
