Album Review

Arnaz burst onto the American music scene when Latin music was enjoying its first taste of success. A record like "Babalu" was viewed back then as primitive and exciting, and Desi's sex appeal and good looks made him the Ricky Martin of his day. He was virtually the only bandleader who had success after World War II, and his combination of highbrow and lowbrow with loads of charisma was irresistible. That this music still holds up well today says more for Desi's abilities than the current vogue for Latin music. Vocal showpieces like "Cuban Pete," "Holiday in Havana," "El Cumbanchero," and "Carnival in Rio" are offset by strong band instrumentals like "Peanut Vendor," Tico Tico," and "Brazil." Those only familiar with Arnaz from his stint on I Love Lucy are in for a major surprise at the high quality of music aboard this collection.

shockingly the first to write a review!

I LOVE DESI ARNAZ- i cant believe im the only one to have come across him on itunes! no one has gotten the chance to write a review about one of the best artists of the century! he's like the Cuban version of Frank Sinatra! Give him a chance... his music grows on you with a touch of the mambo style :] he is truly a classic.

He was amazing!

I'm a big I Love Lucy fan, and I've always loved his music. The man had it all; He was a great singer, actor, not to mention latin hotness! My favorites are 'Babalu' 'The Straw Hat Song", "Cuban Pete", and "Guadalajara". His music is wonderful and I would encourage anyone to give it a chance!

To most of the public, Desi Arnaz is known as the lovable, temperamental Ricky Ricardo, husband of Lucille Ball in the 1950s (in real life and on screen) on one of the most successful television series of all time, I Love Lucy. Within the industry, he's known as one of the forces behind Desilu Productions. Yet before he became an international star, he was known primarily as a musician, not an actor or executive. It was Arnaz who may have done more to popularize the conga in the United States than...
