Album Review

Vocalist Teena Marie began the '90s recovering from an accident in Texas that had broken six ribs. This album was an attempt to recapture her earlier success, and included a song written and produced by Soul II Soul's Jazzie B. Unfortunately, it didn't generate much action, and Marie was unable to halt the slide that had begun in the mid-'80s. Despite some strong, often delightful and energetic vocals, no single from the album exploded, and Marie would soon find herself dropped from the label.

Under the radar!

Many artist's work after long absences are veiwed as comebacks. Like L.L. said don't call it a comeback. Teena Maries talent has long been overlook. While some songs on this album are easy to forget, most are unforgettable. Miracles need wings brings back memories of Teena's earlier work . The power of this album was underestimated and fell under the radar. A good buy!

"Did'nt generate much action?"

The song "If I were A Bell" was at least a top 10 R&B Song (If Not #1), and the CD got plenty of airplay in Philly. Classic among many for Teena!

Hidden Gems!

Though I can't reccommend the album as a whole, even in the 3 star Teena Marie albums you can find 5 star gems! "Here's Looking At You" hit number 11 on the r&b charts and "If I Were A Bell" hit number 8. I remember really liking "Since Day One" at the time, but it sounds a bit dated now. Like the other reviewer from Philly, I remember hearing "If... Bell" along with "Cupid Is A Real Straight Shooter" and "Miracles Need Wings To Fly" on Quiet Storm radio programs A LOT! I also like "Just Us Two". Her best??? No. But def worth cherry picking through for those homemade Teena Marie or Quiet Storm mixes!

No white artist sang R&B more convincingly than Teena Marie, whose big, robust vocals were so black-sounding that when she was starting out, some listeners wondered if she was a light-skinned African-American. Marie grew up in west Los Angeles in a neighborhood that was nicknamed "Venice Harlem" because of its heavy black population. The singer/songwriter/producer was in her early twenties when, around 1977, she landed a job at Motown Records. It was at Motown that she met her mentor and paramour-to-be,...
