Customer Reviews

A poignant, precise, and utterly vicious wordscape on top of amazing beats.

There is nothing about this album that is gentle. Beautiful? Yes. Very much so. But gentle it is not. Get the album, get a glass of scotch on the rocks, sit in a very dark room, turn it up and listen to it all the way through. Spoken word on top of amazing beats. Spoken in a way that is lyrical, by a vocalist and poet (Nicole Blackman) whose words paint pictures that carry emotion like no image could.

The Darkest, Blackest Album You'll Ever Love

Forget music with backwards subliminal messages or lyrics about the devil ... New York poet Nicole Blackman's spoken word poetry renders a brutally dark painting on the stark canvass of hard-beat driven techno. Each track dives deeper and deeper into a kind of psychological hell - the subject of each song tormented by sex, violence, desperation, and desolation. All are vivid and beautiful. Some of my favorite tracks are: The first track, "Victim", finds the singer tied up in the trunk of a car. She ponders her fate, as well as circumstances that led up to it, as she describes the physical reality of being kidnapped. "The Ambitions Are" (track 4) is an eight minute tour-de-force, taking us into the lives of desperate souls who live in a large, uncaring city (presumably New York, but the feel is more like a ramshackle “Gotham” ala Batman): "No desire to move/get rich/become famous/the ambitions are/wake up/breathe/keep breathing." Tracks 6 and 7 - "Holy" and "You Are Never Ready" - deal directly with the subject of death. The former chronicles a woman who takes control of her life by starving herself to death; the later is about the flight of the soul from the world upon dying. Two songs, “Drown” and “Thirst”, are love songs with Blackman’s brutally lyrical twists. Both get into the head of the dysfunction lover, who cannot reconcile concepts like power and control with love and passion.

Dark

Victim might be the darkest ballad I've ever heard. It can't really be described, just buy it.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

The Golden Palominos were not a group per se, but rather the revolving-door project of drummer, programmer, and bandleader Anton Fier. Born June 20, 1956, in Cleveland, Ohio, Fier first made his mark as the drummer on the Feelies' seminal 1980 debut Crazy Rhythms. After leaving the group, he joined the punk-jazz unit the Lounge Lizards before returning home to Cleveland, where he was recruited by the legendary new wave band Pere Ubu for the album Song of the Bailing Man. After exiting Ubu, Fier again...
