iTunes Editors’ Notes

Curtis Mayfield's work with the Impressions grew steadily more political through the '60s. Mayfield's quiet but firm stance on civil rights burst into flame on Curtis, his 1970 solo debut. From the first moments of the opening "Don't Worry (If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go)," this is a loving but sometimes angry album that takes the measure of America in a new decade. The music is still airy Chicago soul, but with a grittier flavor that comes to the fore on the lengthy, inspiring "Move On Up." Mayfield deals in plainspoken truths that take on the force of poetry; "The Other Side of Town" shares those qualities with his later Superfly. This edition pulls together a variety of demos and other odds and ends that help illuminate Mayfield's grand achievement.

Only the Best!

I was a skinny white boy from Chicago stationed in Long Binh, South Viet Nam in 1971-2. I would come back to the hooch after work and put on my Sansui headphones and crank that opening bass line of just THE best soul/RB cut of all time, "If there is hell below . . . ", . . . and I knew that the man understood: "We're all gonna go!." That song was a cold slap in the face at a time when the world needed it. Read some "Autobiography of Malcolm X," turn off rap/hip hop, listen to this album, and get in touch with a man-sized view of the world.

Soul Forever

When music is created from the soul, and speaks to the soul - it lives forever. Thanks Curtis

I am complete now!

Im 35 and like to think of myself as a music enthusiast... How in the heck I never heard CURTIS MAYFIELD is beyond me... I take that back.... I hear Curtis Mayfield everywhere. Who has not been influenced by this man in the rap community. Its like I was lost and now I am found. I love the trully multicultural beat with that obvious 70's feel makes me remember why it good to be alive.

Perhaps because he didn't cross over to the pop audience as heavily as Motown's stars, it may be that the scope of Curtis Mayfield's talents and contributions have yet to be fully recognized. Judged merely by his records alone, the man's legacy is enormous. As the leader of the Impressions, he recorded some of the finest soul vocal group music of the 1960s. As a solo artist in the 1970s, he helped pioneer funk and helped introduce hard-hitting urban commentary into...
