iTunes Editors’ Notes

Kelela's long-awaited Cut 4 Me LP is meant to be viewed as a mixtape. But it could really pass for a proper album—one that's far better than most of the high note–hitting indie R&B fare that's all the rage these days. The reason is simple. While the singer's producers (cherry-picked from two top-flight U.K. labels: Night Slugs and its sister imprint Fade to Mind) are all over the map on their own releases, here they strike a similar chord, maintaining a melodic but deeply strange mix of minimal synth lines, clobbered bass cabinets, and deftly layered samples (stunted handclaps, chatty chickadees, arbitrary car alarms). It's no wonder why Kelela told Pitchfork she cried when she first heard the record's idiosyncratic beats, a welcome terrain of "familiar and unfamiliar textures … an R&B underground vortex." Here's the kicker, though: Kelela doesn't write her lyrics down. Instead she feels the songs out, essentially freestyling over every last detail like she's been known to do at some Night Slugs parties. From the brightly lit start of "Guns & Synths" to the malfunctioning-heart-monitor hooks of "Cherry Coffee," Cut 4 Me is a mission statement.

Fade To Mind brilliance

The resurgence of the R&B singer, especially thru this more technical, minimalist, laser guided approach, creates a very promising sign of how forward thinking music can be. Kingdom’s (and in general FtM’s all star collective) work, really shines thru.

R&B Evolution

This album (and St. Heron/Solange) is evidence R&B is evolving in such an interesting way. Sounds you wouldnt expect to hear are the direction this music is headed. Hopefully mainstream doesnt overkill it...

Alternative R&B vocalist and songwriter Kelela was raised in suburban Maryland and didn't have aspirations as a singer until she started studying jazz. Subsequent obsessions with Amel Larrieux and Little Dragon helped push her toward finding her own style — one she found after she moved to Los Angeles. She connected with Teengirl Fantasy and contributed to the duo's Tracer album on the song "EFX." This led to meeting the Fade to Mind label's Prince William, who exposed her to his associates'...
