Lemon Juju's "Like Candy" -- a delight!

Lemon Juju's new album, Like Candy, explores relationship issues, satirizes a political leader, toys with a Monk's chant, and even gives us a lovely rendition of a familiar standard, all with a fresh slant, clever wit, good humor, and delightful harmonies. Backed primarily by ukulele, some guitar, and on one number, a violin, Lemon Juju's original music is a delight. Vocalists Cynsa Bonorris and Alyn Kelley's voices complement each other, and lead to interesting harmonies and contrasting solo performances. Together, they have a vocal synergy that is wonderful to listen to. The topics in the album are universal but expressed in clever wordplay and creative rhymes rarely heard in today's music. Songs such as Schwarzschild Radius that compares the power of the event horizon of a black hole with a particularly dense boyfriend is wry and creative, as is the gentle humor of Blues Man, which posits the problem of a blues singer whose turn of good fortune gives him nothing to sing about. The achingly poignant Three Whole Days will strike a chord with any woman who has met a seemingly receptive man only to wait not-so-patiently for his contact while using daily mundane tasks to fill the time. I love this album, which touched me on a very personal level. Its creative music can be enjoyed on many levels, and the original songs were complex enough to need repeated playing to fully enjoy the witty wordplay and unusual take on the subject matter. Buy it. You'll like it.

Gorgeous harmonies, wickedly clever lyrics

This album gets in your head and won't leave you alone. I keep thinking how incredibly smart it is, not just the thoughtful, funny, and occasionally heartbreaking lyrics, but the way it's musically all over the map. Lemon Juju skips lightly across genres, embracing folk, blues, pop, even calypso with plucky confidence and kickass banjo-ification. The haunting and lovely "Potscrubber Girl" is a favorite (wonderful arrangement with the cello). "Daddy's Boy" is a frightening journey into the heart of darkness, and "Her Name is Ingrid" may bring tears to your eyes.
