iTunes Review

Part of the extensive Boot Camp Clik, Brooklyn duo Smif-N-Wessun first appeared on Black Moon's Enta Da Stage, before dropping their own album Dah Shinin' in early 1995. Like Black Moon, Tek and Steele rhyme almost exclusively about gunplay and weed smoking, but do it with a style and charisma that sets them apart from the pack. Though unapologetically hardcore, they also inject subtle humor and a reggae influence into their songs, and benefit from some of Da Beatminerz' most impressive production; head-cracking drums and jazzed-out loops galore (the cover art is a visual reference to Roy Ayers' He's Coming LP). A New York classic through and through, it features timeless gems like "Bucktown," "Sound Bwoy Bureill," and "Wontime." After the album's release, a certain firearms company sued and forced them to change their name, (they were temporarily known as Cocoa Brovaz), but they eventually got it back and continue to put out new records and tour the world with the rest of the Duck Down collective.

This album is amazing. I could listen to it all day if I wanted to. It's very underrated in my opinion and I think that everyone that can honestly say that they truly love real hip hop should own this album. This is what hip hop should still sound like today, and I think that all true hip hop fans will agree with me. As you can see by my list below, almost every song is good.

A true hip-hop storybook of charasmatic tree smoking rappers with a rawness blending well with the gritty and sometimes melodic beats to serve up a dish of a true tastiness. A hidden gem to please all of my fellow hip-hop junkies.

Da Iillest!!!

Wow! This album brings back memories, of the good ole back pack days, when hip hop was young and fresh and lovely. I was thrusted back into momentum! I love this album 4 ever!

Part of Brooklyn's talented Boot Camp Clik, the powerful tandem of Smif-n-Wessun got their start on Black Moon's classic debut, Enta da Stage, in 1993. Rudeboy MCs Tek and Steele made their presence felt on the cuts "U da Man" and "Black Smif N' Wessun." In early 1994, the crew scored a massive underground hit with "Bucktown," a reference to their violence-plagued Bedford-Stuyvesant stomping grounds and "home of the original gun clappas." Their debut LP, Dah Shinin', followed soon thereafter, unleashing...
