iTunes Review

The impressive self-titled debut album of Brooklyn quintet Fang Island sounds like it was extraordinarily fun to make. They refuse to let things like song structure or singing get in the way of getting rad — though they’re not afraid to adhere to the occasional verse and chorus formula as well as some sporadically choired gang-vocals. “Dreams of Dreams” sets the stage with recorded fireworks, simple yet honest life-affirming lyrics and ascending layers of metallic guitarmonies. But before you paint Fang Island in the same corner as the Go! Team or even the Polyphonic Spree (remember them?), “Careful Crossers” comes in blasting proggy math-rocking algorithms that make Oneida’s arrangements seem simple. The unpredictable but palatable “Daisy” is a marvel in that such experiments in recording are rarely this successful. It’s easy to understand why Fang Island describe their sound as “everyone high-fiving everyone.” These vibrant and colorful musings emit an infectiously triumphant feeling, like drunkenly riding a unicorn through a White Castle drive-thru just as morning begins to break.

Like closing your eyes, growing a set of wings, and taking to the sky wearing nothing but a tambourine and a smile.

First entire album I've purchases in over 5 years.

IF...Weezer, Led Zepplin, Boston, and Spookfish all mated the product would be a giant sparkly unicorn. Fang Island is the guy riding that thing.

Truly unique

Fang Island's latest effort leaves listeners feeling great about life, revitalized, with visions of high-fiving majestic lions and slaying giant beasts. The band's sound is completely unique and refreshing, a major turn from anything being put out by bands today. Fang Island are on to something good here, and it would be a shame to miss out on it's feel-good-wicked-awesomeness.

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The Brooklyn-based indie rock outfit Fang Island craft impossibly heavy, hymn-like anthems that blend the uplifting and accessible hard rock melodiousness of Andrew W.K. and the D.I.Y. recording style of Surfer Blood with the offbeat tech-heavy progressive metal of bands like Protest the Hero and Sparta. Formed in Providence as an art project while the members were all attending the Rhode Island School of Design, the band (comprised of guitarist Jason Bartell, bassist Michael Jacober, guitarist Chris...
