iTunes Review

One-man power station RJD2’s heady, psychedelic funk hasn’t sounded this strong since his 2002 breakthrough, Dead Ringer. Fusing the crate-digging collages of his early work with underground rap, '70s soul, sci-fi synthscapes, and the songwriter impulses of The Third Hand, Dame Fortune is an expansive, encyclopedic experience that covers so much ground in so little time you wonder what kind of ship he’s driving. Take, for example, the opening hat trick of “A Portal Inward,” “The Roaming Hoard,” and “Peace of What,” which gets us from Mars, 3003 to Philadelphia, 1972 without breaking a sweat.

Thankfully this noise will be confined to mostly headphone space so the suffering of others will be kept to a minimum, or you could listen to RJD2’s older music. That music is worth bitcoins more than this.

I've been waiting months for this release, I'm absolutely in love with his new project!

The Best Beat Baker

No reviews yet? Alright, look, RJ is a dope producer. Dude can make beats with the best of 'em. Not only that, he bakes all kinds of cakes and pies and other morsels that'll make your mouth water. He's the best beat baker around, so buy this album and get to movin', shakin', bakin'... whatever it is you want to do... because this album is oven fresh.

RJD2's music is a collage of cut-and-paste hip-hop that combines disparate elements to make for soulful, moody portraits of the world. Born Ramble John Krohn in Eugene, Oregon, on May 27, 1976, he moved to Columbus, Ohio a few years later and was raised there. He first busted out onto the hip-hop scene in 1998 -- a time when producers were emerging from the shadows to seize the spotlight -- as the DJ/producer for the Columbus-based group Megahertz. MHz had two 12" singles released on Bobbito Garcia's...
