Album Review

Released in the summer of 2003, The Best of Sophie B. Hawkins is the first retrospective on the adult alternative singer/songwriter, and it's not without its quirks — which might be appropriate for this particular singer/songwriter. The biggest quirk is that even though it contains all of her hits — "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover," "Right Beside You," "As I Lay Me Down," "Only Love (The Ballad of Sleeping Beauty)" — it completely overlooks her third album, Timbre, which is a bit odd, especially since it contains two new songs in "California Here I Come" and a cover of the Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," not to mention the Butcher Brothers' remix of "As I Lay Me Down." This is a problem, but it's not a major one, since Tongues & Tails (represented with five tracks) and Whaler (represented with six) are her two most popular albums, and they make for good companions, particularly since the best moments are distilled here, making it both a good summary and introduction to a singer/songwriter who often gets overlooked because she's too mainstream for alternative and too unusual for the mainstream.

Sophie rocks!

I totally forgot about half of these songs until I went on iTunes to search for this artist! When I was growing up in the 90's her song "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" used to be my favorite song! I loved her voice and the pop-rock style of this mid tempo song. I also loved her 2nd biggest hit "As I Lay Me Down." While she may not be popular anymore I still enjoy her past hits very much.

itunes recomended this to me because I had music from guns and roses

Damn I wish I was your lover

This song is so free spirited, alot of emotion and frankly intrigues me! This woman reminds me so much of My Best Friend. I find this artist naturally beautiful inside and out. No matter how she got here, she's a survivor~! You go girl. I love U

A proudly idiosyncratic singer and songwriter who embraces an eclectic range of musical influences and isn't afraid to be nakedly confessional in her music, Sophie B. Hawkins enjoyed unexpected commercial success with her debut album, but since then has opted to follow her muse rather than a major label's marketing department. Sophie Ballantine Hawkins was born in New York City on November 1, 1967. Hawkins grew up in a family that valued art and creativity but was troubled by alcoholism, and as a...
