"Carry the Fire (Deluxe Version)" by Delta Rae on iTunes

EDITORS’ NOTES

North Carolina's Delta Rae was signed to its label by Seymour Stein, who also signed The Ramones, Talking Heads, The Pretenders, Madonna, and The Smiths and who was paid tribute with a song by Belle & Sebastian bearing his name. Such high regard raises the ante for this sextet, featuring siblings Brittany, Ian, and Eric Holljes and three nonrelated members. The band's debut album is a mix of Americana influences, with a definite gospel shade projecting from the female vocals of "Holding On to Good" and the collective voices on "Bottom of the River." Harmonies are an integral aspect of the group's appeal, and the vocal ensemble of "Country House" and the spirited "Morning Comes" bear this out. The exquisite drama of "Forgive the Children We Once Were" reels back the band's sound to a subtler arrangement of piano and strings before building to cathartic heights. "Unlike Any Other" similarly works with the quieter end of the spectrum for outsized results. The album's deluxe edition features acoustic versions of "Morning Comes" and the nonalbum track "New Days."

Bobz cousin,

It is different

My favorite album of the year!

ashmonkey12816,

I love this album so much! I had heard all of these songs live before the album release, but the new arrangements are stellar! Delta Rae and Alex Wong (producer) are a good match! Every single member of this group is super talented and this album does a great job of showcasing everyone. My favorite song is Surrounded. The horns on it are killer, and even though I love all the singers in this band, there's something about Eric's voice that gets to me a little more than the others. Dancing in the Graveyards is a close second, with everything else being a super close third. I have never been this in love with an entire album before! If you're trying to decide between the regular version, and the deluxe, spend the extra $2 and get the deluxe. New Days is the first song I ever heard from the band (on a livestream), and they dedicated it to my friends and I at our first show! Also, Morning Comes has a very special place in my heart. I have at least 4 different version of it, and the acoustic version is now probably my favorite. I don't feel like I'm doing this album justice...the WHOLE thing is so good! BUY IT!

About Delta Rae

Earthy familial alt-pop outfit Delta Rae skillfully juggle gospel-tinged country-rock, sensual blue-eyed soul, and harmony-laden Americana, resulting in an infectious, radio-ready sound that falls somewhere between Nickel Creek and Adele. Formed in 2009 as a four-piece around the talents of siblings Ian, Eric, and Brittany Hölljes, along with Elizabeth Hopkins, the North Carolina-based band expanded to a sextet the following year with the additions of Mike McKee and Grant Emerson. In 2011 the group inked a deal with Sire/Warner Bros. after a particularly impressive in-office audition for Seymour Stein, who was blown away by Hopkins and the Hölljes siblings' powerful voices. The resulting Carry the Fire, their major-label debut, arrived in 2012. Carry the Fire reached 11 on the U.S. Heatseekers chart and 13 on the folk chart. Delta Rae released their second album, After It All, in the spring of 2015. In 2017, the band released a new EP, A Long and Happy Life, which featured the hit single of the same name. ~ James Christopher Monger
