This was my only exposure to Alpahville in the 80's and it brings back lots of fond memories of my early days. Yes, it's a little kitschy, but who cares? That was the 80's! Nonetheless, the vocal orchestrations are beautiful, especially on IAO and Afternoons In Utopia. I will have to check out some of their other works, but for now, this collection will do whenever I want to reminisce about my early adulthood.

WLIR 80s

They were so fantastic. They proved Big in Japan (was that the name of the 1st album?) wasnt just a one album wonder, they were just as good on Afternoons in Utopia. So many great but almost obscure songs. Gotta listen to red rose, universal daddy & Lassie come home.

I liked it then, I like it now

When this came out I played it start-finish. "Red Rose", "Sensations" and "Dance with Me" make me want to dance... er, drive fast. "Universal Daddy" has wacky lyrics and suffers a bit of 80's lock, but it's so dang catchy you'll be slapping your steering-wheel to the beat. Some of the best songs on this album are the slower ones. I used to lay back and "contemplate deep thoughts," as teenagers do, when I played this tape - yes, I said tape. There are a couple of weird ones in there though; "20th Cent" and "Lady Bright." They take a while to get used to but eventually they grow on you (and you stop skipping them). I forgot how much I liked this band. I always thought they were ahead of their time

German synth pop group Alphaville enjoyed major success in the United States with their early hits "Forever Young" and "Big in Japan," and went on to a lasting career in Europe, South America, and Asia. Alphaville were formed by vocalist and lyricist Marian Gold and keyboard player Bernhard Lloyd, both of whom were members of the Nelson Community, a multimedia art collective based in Berlin. Gold and Lloyd were part of a short-lived band called Chinchilla Green (other members went on to form the...
