Album Review

A 180-degree departure from contemporary commercial country music, album number six from the always dynamic Loveless is like a breath of fresh air on a steamy summer afternoon. Mountain Soul is a rare and brilliant acoustic 14-track album of bluegrass mountain music. Amidst the mandolins, fiddles, and banjos is Loveless' harking alto voice, singing from her soul to the music she grew up with. Just when you thought the days of Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, and the Stanley Brothers were gone, Loveless brings them back with new life and staggering grace. Rounding out this ubiquitous collection are soft-singing collaborators Travis Tritt, Ricky Skaggs, and Rebecca Lynn Howard.

Top Notch Mountain Soul

By far Patty Loveless' best work, and that's saying a lot. No one can sing mountain and bluegrass music with the same soul as Patty. Listen to "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" and you'll understand. Makes Darrell Scott's original sound like a bubble gum song. Great stuff and highly recommended.

A beautiful album.

For anyone that's ever lived in or near the coal patches of the western U.S., this album sounds like home. I strongly recommend any true country-music lover to check out this album. It's near perfect.

The best of her work

This is the best she has done and most artistically interesting as well. I like Pretty Little Miss and Sounds of Loneliness as well as Out of Control Raging Fire. The picking is great and so are the vocals.

One of the most popular female singers of the new traditionalist movement, Patty Loveless rose to stardom thanks to her blend of honky tonk and country-rock, not to mention a plaintive, emotional ballad style. Her late-'80s records for MCA were generally quite popular, earning her comparisons to Patsy Cline, but most critics agreed that she truly came into her own as an artist when she moved to Epic in the early '90s. Loveless was born Patricia Lee Ramey in Pikeville, KY, in 1957 and spent most...
