iTunes Review

Jimbo Mathus has a solo career as substantial as his other career as a member of Squirrel Nut Zippers, and in 2014 that solo career has seen more activity. After his much-acclaimed solo album White Buffalo, his debut for the esteemed Fat Possum label, Mathus returns with Dark Night of the Soul, which was not only produced by Fat Possum’s Bruce Watson but was worked on steadily for months at Watson’s Dial Back Sound studio with engineer/instrumentalist Bronson Tew. Roughly 40 songs were brought to tape, with Watson serving as Mathus’ editor and narrowing the album to its essentials. This shows off Mathus as a rock ’n’ roll veteran, with a sense of Van Morrison, Garland Jeffreys, and Graham Parker mixing with the rougher Southern ends of Mathus’ sound. “Rock & Roll Trash” salutes the music with a tough groove and a nod to Lou Reed in the lyrics, while the Mississippi-bred Mathus uses his band The Tri-State Coalition (with Ryan Rogers on drums and the incomparable Eric “Roscoe” Ambel on guitars) to ensure nothing sounds too rehearsed or studied.

Another Great Record from a Mississippi Gem

Jimbo has been making good music for many years. As a followup to the superb White Buffalo record, Jimbo once again tapped into his Mississippi roots to create an album filled with crafty lyrics and superb sound. Each song bounces from blues to folk to country to rock, keeping the listener both entertained and amazed with the craftsmanship of a fine, well rounded record. Keep the Catfish Music coming.

Jimbo done good

This album has more soul.. not R&B soul.. but lyrically.. Jimbo seems to pour out some serious lyrics on this one.. well done.. recorded in the Great land of MISSISSIPPI!!!

Jim "Jimbo" Mathus first gained fame as the co-founder of the retro-swing outfit the Squirrel Nut Zippers. But after the group's messy breakup, he went on to a prolific career as a guitarist, songwriter, and producer, defining his own brand of revved-up blues and roots music. Using a variety of stage names, including James Mathus, Jas Mathus, Jimbo "Hambone" Mathus, and Jimbo Mathus, he first began stepping out on his own as a sideman with one-time Zippers' violinist Andrew Bird.
