iTunes Review
“I’ve seen too much,” declares Annie Lennox on her fourth solo album, Songs of Mass Destruction (2007). Certainly, the ex-Eurythmics singer’s prodigious voice implies centuries of human experience. But for all her world-weariness, this pop grande dame seems desperate for renewal and liberation, both in personal and global terms: themes of struggle and heroism lend this album a somber yet stirring tone. As in the past, Lennox often projects an austere persona with “Through The Glass Darkly” and “Coloured Bedspread” as examples of her icier side. She can turn volcanic as well, smoldering soulfully on “Love Is Blind and erupting into thrilling vocal highs on “Big Sky.” Rather than striking the elusive poses of her earlier days, she makes songs like “Smithereens” and “Fingernail Moon” into revealing confessions, and striving for a sense of community, she includes just about every notable female singer you can think of on “Sing." On the whole, this album is utterly self-assured, thanks both to Lennox’s command of her art and Glen Ballard’s fine-tailored production. A long time in coming, Songs of Mass Destruction is a creation worthy of Lennox’s legendary status.

Songs of Mass Re-Creation
This has been an AWFUL year for me -- this CD is like FOOD for my soul. I've been on food stamps for 4 months, and I absolutely had to scrape together every quarter I had and instead of buying groceries, I bought this CD today instead -- it feeds me more. Annie (if I may be so bold) and I have travelled the same road for so long -- every time she comes out with a new collection of pieces, it seems to so accurately reflect where I have been in my life just before, or what I'm going through right at that moment. I listened to her commentary on the song "Dark Road" (The special edition of the CD comes with a full CD of commentary!!) and I just BURST into tears listening to her say the words (I'm paraphrasing) "it amazes me how a single moment -- a flick -- can entirely change your life and things can just go wrong" This CD is VERY satisfying, its healing, its so... the antitheis of those who say "Screw Guilt, Screw Regrets" its saying -- we're human, look around you, we ALL have guilt, sadness, regret. Own it. LOOK at the poeple around you, look them in the eye, SEE them. Everyone has a tender heart. Remember this. And I didn't mean to break it down to smithereens. I hope this CD brings you as much as it has me. This woman is amazing. -Rob
Srong as Ever
I first saw Annie Lennox live over 20 years ago. A strong voice and wonderfull performance have always been her signature. Some musicians truely have a gift. Songs of Mass Destruction shows that her talent has not faded over the years. Give Dark Road and Big Sky a listen and you will understand the power of her voice. However, there is truly not a bad song in the bunch. This should create a new generation of Annie Lennox fans!
Best Annie Lennox Album in YEARS!
I've enjoyed a track or two from every album. But not since Diva have I enjoyed just letting an Annie Lennox album play through. Dark Road is great, but Smithereens is absolutely sublime. Sing is a fantastic track as well, both for it's content and form. I have been waiting for the release for weeks. Diva was such a great album. It was always close. Always within reach. This album seems to be the same. Not just a collection of songs, but a soundtrack, that will in years from now, remind me of where I was in the Fall of 2007. Classic album. Annie Lennox, thank you so very much! I also have to endorse the new Eurythmics complation, while not complete, a wonderful sampling of the greatest hits.
