iTunes Review

Like another ’80s sensation, the Beastie Boys, the Reid brothers must’ve known that their debut album was so perfectly realized that they couldn’t pull off its gorgeous shock twice. Some elements of Psychocandy remain on 1987’s Darklands — its hooky melodicism, its dips into downtempo melancholy — but this time they’re major elements, wiped clean of the early album's blanketing feedback. The result is a bit like goth under the influence of ’60s pop: Had it been written back in the day, Dusty Springfield could have slotted the gloomily epic “Nine Million Rainy Days” next to one of her Jacques Brel specials, while “Happy When It Rains,” by contrast, is a blazingly cheerful anthem for life in England. The sound of this remastered edition is even richer and deeper. Listen for the cymbal washes on “Rainy Days” or the field of guitars that propels “Deep One Perfect Morning.”

Great stuff

this is one of those albums that you have to keep with you at all times, put it on when its raining, put it on when it's nice, just put it on. It's one of my all time faves.

Perfect Darkness

This is one of Jesus and Mary Chain's best album Whereas Psychocandy was was a sound of feedback and punk noise, Darklands took it down to a mournful, acoustic and melodic blend. The album has some of the best songs ever; "Darklands", "Happy When It Rains", "Nine Million Rainy Days", "April Skies" and "Down On Me." Beautiful darkness.

A "must have" in your collection

I listen to an extremely wide variety of music. That said, this is the type of album that anyone who appreciates music, can enjoy. If I could only keep 5 albums in my whole collection, Darklands would be one of them. This album doesn't show a lot of the feedback and distortion that earlier works emphasized, instead pushing the lyrics and melody to the forefront. That lyrics are so depressingly beautiful, that I sometimes have to laugh when I'm listening. The opening track is a classic in that regard. Track 2 shows off Williams Reids lower vocal approach with great affect. Cherry Came Too sounds like the an old Beach Boys tune that JMC put lyrics to. All in all, incredible lyrics, beautiful and edgy music, and not a wasted song on this album. Don't take my advice - have a listen.

Like the Velvet Underground, their most obvious influence, the chart success of the Jesus and Mary Chain was virtually nonexistent, but their artistic impact was incalculable; quite simply, the Scottish group made the world safe for white noise, orchestrating a sound dense in squalling feedback that served as an inspiration to everyone from My Bloody Valentine to Dinosaur Jr. Though the supporting players drifted in and out of focus, the heart of the Mary Chain remained vocalists and guitarists William...
