okay... so this was recorded during a live performance.... so you can hear all the stage action. This certainly takes away from the music when you can't actually see the stage! Also, the gapless playback for this is completely awful, each track fades out and back in again of its own accord. Do not purchase!!

What's with the criticism?

This recording comes from the Bayreauth Festival, the original hometown of the Ring Cycle. It's a great performance and it's the cheapest buy if you want the whole thing. Most copies will cost you $90+, especially ones of this recording quality. The singing is great and the orchestra is right on. It's a little quiet at times but that doesn't phase anyone with volume control. Because it's a through composed opera with few breaks in the orchestration, it doesn't have clear track breaks. So you just don't hit shuffle, listen to it the way it was meant to be listened to, and you get a great experience of the operas. DO buy it. Just prepare your ears. It is Wagner. :)

A conductor's performance, but with some good singing

True, the singers on this collection are not always up to the standards of the "Golden Age" of Wagner singing (1930s), or even the "Silver Age" (1950s), but most turn in solid performances. The true star is Boulez and the Bayreuth orchestra. His tempos are fast (some may not agree), but it adds to the drama. Orchestra textures are incredibly clear, allowing access to details one would be hard pressed to find in most other conductors' performances.
