Download worked fine for me

As the previous reviewer pointed out, Schiff and the Well Tempered Clavier are a match made in heaven. I've truly enjoyed and heard something new in these performances, even the "greatest hits" like the C Minor and E-flat major preludes and fugues in Book I. Schiff's playing is clean and expressive as always, and his ear for melody brings out new facets of the work in a way that sounds natural or even inevitable.

I hesitated to download the $40 set because of the previous reviewer's problem with playback, but I wanted this badly, so I started with just a couple of tracks. But I can hear no problems at all, and iTunes automatically deducted the cost of those tracks from the whole set when I bought it. PaulinPaloAlto, maybe you can delete and re-download and enjoy the album now.

Samples indeed have issues

I am eager to get this recording, but paulinpaloalto's description of audio issues made me hesitate. I took his advice and listened to samples using headphones, and I'm glad I did.

Midrange to high frequencies are modulated with something that seems to be a kind of tremolo, at a speed of roughly 10-12 cycles per second. I can't tell if harmonics are being added or subtracted, but the resulting effect is unpleasant indeed.

For what it's worth, I majored in music - focusing on electronic music - at Brown University, and have nearly four decades of professional audio recording experience. Paul and I aren't imagining things; there is something amiss in the encoding, at least in the samples.

I still plan to purchase this recording in CD format. ECM is known worldwide for many things, and one of them is the quality of their piano recordings. It is not possible that the source material would display these issues. I am reluctant to apply a star rating, but I must in order to post this comment. I will follow Paul's example, posting three stars.

It is truly unfortunate that Mr. Schiff's artistry should be subjected to this kind of averaging, but my rating represents five stars for his performance and original recording, and zero stars for this defective encoding. I sincerely hope that Apple or ECM will address this issue soon, so that more people can experience this remarkable work in something closer to its intended fidelity.

Don't be fooled

This is an absolutely BRILLIANT recording of these preludes and fugues. Yes, it is true that the sound doesn't quite match up to Schiff's brilliance. But the sound is really fine, it really is not bad in any way, and the interpretations... I can't say enough about them. If you are really into production issues, then i guess you're going to miss out on a trip to the celestial regions. Whatever. Everyone has their thing. But if you are Bach lover, like me, and a Well-Tempered Clavier lover, like me, GET THIS NOW!
