Editors’ Notes

The follow-up to 2009’s Try Brother finds Capybara returning to wintry indie rock, but the songs on their sophomore album, Dave Drusky, sound more cleverly crafted. From the jangling opener, “Late Night Bikes,” it’s evident that the Kansas City quartet has been solidifying its musical chemistry between its albums, with plenty of touring and time to flesh out ideas. Another noticeable change is Joel Wrolstad’s vocal confidence. After exercising restraint on Try Brother, he drives his varied inflections all over Dave Drusky. Check out those elongated vowel drawls in “Rain Apollo Trees” or “Neighbor Crimes,” where his throaty bursts segue into Beach Boys–inspired harmonies. Darin Seal’s keyboard work shows more variety here as well. Although he runs through a gamut of tones, Seal sounds at home when droning on the grinds of a vintage organ. In the lilting “Pierre Bensusan,” he switches from '80s-flavored synths to the warbling notes of an old Hammond B3. More magical sounds undulate from what sounds like a “Strawberry Fields”–era Mellotron on the lilting “Vandals.”

Customer Reviews

.Fathomless Wonders.

A haunting majesty of sound spans these ten songs. Nostalgia blooms and ebbs its untouchable hiers abound. It is hard to pick favorites amongst these ten friends. Lets just say they may be standing in a line but from time to times a few step forward to take a bow. Right now those pals are : Neighbor Crimes, Leaflet, Vandals and Ruby Eyelids.

Great album - how about some shows?

Great music

Another great release by one of Kansas City's best young bands. The sound feels good. Can't help but smile when it is on. Looking forward to more great things from Capybara.
