A journey through darkness into light

John Stone's eloquent settings for soprano and piano of four poems by Langston Hughes take the listener on a moving journey from the brooding "Georgia Dusk" to the hopeful "Daybreak in Alabama," paying homage in closing to Billie Holiday and the joy of spring rain.

Amy Bartram's lush soprano, clear articulation and thoughtful phrasing are cradled and uplifted by John Stone's lovely blues melodies and sensitive accompaniment. "Daybreak" is instantly appealing, yet rewards repeated listening on many levels. Like a good meal, these songs nourish body and soul, leaving you both wonderfully satisfied and wanting to hear more.

This is compelling music from two gifted artists.

Moving and Beautiful

I've had the privilege of experiencing these songs live in concert and I loved hearing them. These recordings are just as moving, beautiful and haunting.
