Editors’ Notes

Out of the Beachwood Sparks’ fruitful family tree, steel guitar/keyboard player Farmer Dave Scher has proven to be the most prolific member. Before his solo debut on Kemado Records, he and drummer Jimi Hey birthed this outstanding 2004 album for Sub Pop under the All Night Radio moniker. The album blends a bit of Beachwood’s cosmic twang with heavy doses of sonic experimentations in layered soundscapes. “Daylight Till Dawn” opens with the psychedelic whimsy of Curt Boettcher’s ‘60s band the Millennium as harpsichord notes melt into heavily delayed guitars while Farmer Dave croons cascading harmonies into buckets of reverb. Just when you think you’ve got them figured out, they segue into Beck-like baroque pop on “Fall Down 7,” replete with vintage breakbeats, mariachi horns, Spanish-sung lyrics, and a bass groove that commands dancing. Still, “You’ll Be On Your Own” is enveloped in the quirky changes and catchy melodies of '90s indie rock and the breezy “Sky Bicycle” overflows with the Golden State’s good vibrations.

Outstanding psychedelic pop

This music sounds remarkably similar to keyboardist Richard Wright's early Pink Floyd songs, only more accessible. The tunes are breezy and happy but don't lack substance. It's unfortunate this band called it quits after just one release.

Surreal and psychedelic

This album got me through a Middle East deployment - there was nothing better than flying in a helo over the Persian Gulf close to the end of the day and listening to Sad K or We're on Our Wave. The 70s/psychedelic sound made the experience incredibly surreal. Even now when I listen to it, I'm transported back... but in a good way.

Jimmy rocks the drums!

Thank you Alexis for this CD. Jimmy did a great job. Love it. Deprise

Beachwood Sparks members Dave Scher and Jimi Hey formed All Night Radio in 2002, following Hey's return to the Beachwood Sparks lineup after a five-year break. The project was named in honor of Scher's late-night radio days. Back in 1995, long before the two became bandmates in Beachwood Sparks, Hey (who was 16 at the time) would call in to Scher's show on KXLU every night and request Six Finger Satellite. Scher and Hey viewed All Night Radio as a vehicle for some of their more adventurous musical...
