In a year, 1967, that also brought the world, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Are You Experienced? and The Velvet Underground & Nico, came this ambitious concept album from the Moody Blues. With musical assistance from the London Festival Orchestra, the band pursued the story of a journeyman’s day to night, which explains the song titles, “The Day Begins,” “Lunch Break: Peak Hour,” “Evening” and the poetry used to link the tracks. Packed within this gorgeous orchestration were two hit singles in the deliriously romantic “Nights In White Satin” and the trippy ode to leisure, “Tuesday Afternoon,” which, on the album, is melded into the more ambitious “The Afternoon: Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)” with the “(Evening) Time To Get Away” track. The album takes a wild chance on combining orchestral maneuvers and spacey, British psychedelia and pulls it off as a brilliant period piece. Ambitious backing vocals add a colorful dimension to “The Morning: Another Morning.” Flutes and strings wander through the hypnotic tunes, bringing a meditative calm to “Evening” with “The Sunset” and “Twilight Time.”  A classic.

Music is a powerful thing

It's funny cause when I bought this album I showed it to my grandparents lol and they were like 'man thos guys were so ahead of their time man' and you could literally see it in their face that the music touched them. I mean I really doubt I will have the same reaction when my grandchildren show me something like Kate Perry er lady gaga, you know lol

Nice Blend of Symphony and Rock. Definitely a Classic!

This album is definitely a classic. Mixing rock and symphony, this masterpiece is a showcase of Moody Blues at their best. I suggest downloading the whole album because it all flows together as one piece and is a concept album.

That man

many of us old folk that were around for this can recite what that man says at the end by heart and it's classic. Can't play the song w/o it. Saw them last night in Northern Cal. Worth the 30+ year wait.

Although they're best known today for their lush, lyrically and musically profound (some would say bombastic) psychedelic-era albums, the Moody Blues started out as one of the better R&B-based combos of the British Invasion. The group's history began in Birmingham, England with Ray Thomas (harmonica, vocals) and Mike Pinder (keyboards, vocals), who had played together in El Riot & the Rebels and the Krew Cats. They began recruiting members of...
