Editors’ Notes

Days of Gold finds Jake Owen easing into the role of a top-rank country artist with an affable Dude Next Door charm. The native Floridian’s fourth album is less of a radical departure than a return to the carefree country moods that dominated his earlier releases. Fans of Owen’s 2011 breakthrough hit “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” will connect with the party-hearty attitude that radiates from upbeat tunes like “Beachin’,” “Tall Glass of Something," and the title track. Jake moves beyond typical country reference points to embrace classic rock with gusto on the guitar-fueled “1972.” Romance takes the front seat on “One Little Kiss (Never Killed Nobody)” and “Sure Feels Right,” while “Ghost Town” is an ode to lost love delivered with a bittersweet edge. Owen delivers these feel-good numbers with sincerity and sly humor—but also distinguishes himself as a convincing balladeer in “What We Ain’t Got,” a post-breakup tune with real anguish in its lines. In between the summertime anthems and wistful reflections, there’s a sense here of an artist coming into his own.
