iTunes Editors’ Notes

Sadly, The Smiths couldn't stay together. A distinct highlight of the '80s alternative scene, The Smiths represented the power of teenage feelings and gorgeous pop melodies. The perfect marriage of Johnny Marr’s music and Morrissey’s lyrics came together for one last push with this: their fourth and final studio album. With Stephen Street producing, the British quartet achieved a fuller sound that made Marr’s guitar colorings particularly bright, with strings and horns added in strategic spots. Morrissey matched the production’s additional hues by writing another batch of punchy and pithy musings. The solemn horror of “Girlfriend in a Coma” is eased by an indelible melody. “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before,” “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me," and “Unhappy Birthday” work toward Morrissey’s self-parodic self-pity. He’s clearly aware of the impression he’s making and reveling in his cheekiness. This playful demeanor balances the often-desperate anger that lurks underneath (“Paint a Vulgar Picture,” “I Won’t Share You").

I used to listen to this in college a lot. A very good album. My favorite songs are A Rush and a Push, Death of a Disco Dancer, Last NIght I Dreamt Someone Love Me, and Death at One's Elbow. A solid album.

I have been requesting that itunes acquire this album for almost 3 years! Paint a vulgar picture has to be one of the greatest songs that takes me back to a great time in my life. Ironic for the Smiths, lol.

All time classic!!!

A must have album! Have always loved The Smith's. One of the most unique voices.

The Smiths were the definitive British indie rock band of the '80s, marking the end of synth-driven new wave and the beginning of the guitar rock that dominated English rock into the '90s. Sonically, the group was indebted to the British Invasion, crafting ringing, melodic three-minute pop singles, even for their album tracks. But their scope was far broader than that of a revivalist band. The group's core members, vocalist Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr, were obsessive rock fans inspired by...
