a race to the finish?

Technically, she's amazing -- her fingers move like lightning; but she lacks the depth of expression requisite for Debussy and other impressionist composers. You'll find better, richer interpretations from Kathryn Stott (perfect example: Her Passepied is 4 minutes long, vs. Alexis's hasty 2:54.) I wish I'd listened to a few more options before making this choice.

The Great

Yes, she's amazing all right. Both Alexis and Claude, the girls are all right (;->. Well, I must disagree with both reviewers above. Weissenberg is for me one of the great Debussy players. Sparkling, strong, not mushy, not (God Save the Queen) "impressionistic", but absolutely astonishing. Also one of the great Scarlatti players. Don't think of him (Alexis) as a big-technique warhorse guy. This album is one of my favorites of all time and my single favorite (if I had to pick only one) Debussy album.

breathtaking

This set of recordings of Debussy was controversial from the start - a virtuoso approach to what often is played with too much reflectiveness and sentimentality. Debussy's music is deceptively difficult to play, and I suspect that many a player does not play some of these passages at the speeds that Weissenberg does because they can't. But this is not some haphazard undisciplined performance. And for me, the music does have color and life, it is impressionism with some spirit. It's not all speed - just listen to the samples of Pagodes, Soiree Dans Grenade, the opening chords of Suite Bergamesque's Prelude. It's changes of speed, reflectiveness mixed with passion. This is my favorite Debussy recording (and I've got a few to compare with it).

Biography

Born: July 26, 1929 in Sofia, Bulgaria

Genre: Classical

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s

If one wanted to make a biographical feature film about a classical musician, the life of the Bulgarian-American-French pianist Alexis Weissenberg would furnish ideal subject material. Born in Sofia in 1929, Weissenberg was taught to play the piano by his mother. Several members of her family were Vienna Conservatory-trained musicians, and Weissenberg grew up in an environment where the sight-reading of chamber music was as common as watching television is for most children today. His second piano...
