Album Review

Within the context of its times, lovehatetragedy is a gamble of sorts, as Papa Roach abandons their affiliation with rock/rap fusion (except for one highly effective moment on "She Loves Me Not") and hies back to their original pure metal- and punk-inflected hard rock stance. Lead singer Coby Dick certifies the change by reverting to his birth name, Jacoby Shaddix, but in other respects his performance sticks to its formula of gut-busting delivery and lyrics whose candor can get a little embarrassing. (On "Decompression Period," for instance, he essentially tells his band as well as his beleaguered wife that he's sick of being around them.) A few tracks, most notably "Singular Indestructible Droid," struggle toward metaphor, with mixed results. What can't be denied is that Shaddix's woes connect directly to a large and equally confused audience, and that nobody this side of Kurt Cobain communicates them with as much power. As always, his message rides a turbulent current of guitar/bass riffs whose militaristic precision only enhances their intensity. ~ Robert L. Doerschuk, Rovi

Born To Rock

Among the mess of music that was released in 2002, Papa Roach produced a beauty. The tracks flow so perfectly together it's as if they were one long song. For many years, rock songs were just rock songs but on "Code of Energy" this is an anthem lending it's hand back to a time where progressive rock ruled all. If you love guitar riffs, great beats, and powerfull lyrics, check out Lovehatetragedy...originally titled, Born To Rock (as seen by the cover).

Just listen a little

When i first heard Papa Roach, it was their hit "scars," i never really thought much about them, but then i looked them up, and listened to the top few downloaded songs, and soon i had bought a lot of songs. Songs i recommend are : Last Resort, Be Free, She Loves Me Not, and my most played song on itunes, Done With You.

Risky But Successful

While ditching the rap/rock theme was a major risk in their career, it was one of their most effective. While no by them may ever become Multi Platinum, Papa Roach is always trying to make things different. The lack of rap has led them into a whole new world full of new fans. While Infest was great, I wouldn't want to hear another CD of the same genre by Papa Roach.

Starting out as a punk- and rap-influenced band, the Northern California group Papa Roach eventually grew into a straight-ahead hard rock ensemble with strong heavy metal leanings. Consisting of Coby Dick, Jerry Horton, Dave Buckner, and Tobin Esperance, Papa Roach formed in 1993 and began releasing EPs soon after, including 1994's Potatoes for Christmas and 1995's C**a Bonita. By 1996, the group had replaced original bassist Will James with Esperance and hired a new...
