Album Review

Ray Lynch's synthesizer playing sometimes approximates keyboard instruments and sometimes sounds like individually plucked strings on electrified string instruments, but always has a deeply textured melodic structure and a buoyant rhythmic underpinning. Isolated notes in series and patterns make a pointillistic mosaic of sound that alternately soothes and stimulates. No wonder this is one of the best-selling new-age albums of all time.

deep breakfast and childhood

I have to say I almost find it disturbing that I went to iTunes to find this album (because I used to listen to it as a small child in my parents living room when no one was around) only to discover two other reviews writing to the same effect, that the writers' searched him out after remembering the songs as kids. There is something simple and haunting about this music. If you can remove the critical impulse that might tell you it's too new agey or sentimental, it's almost like you're hearing music for the first time.

This was the first CD I listened to on my family's new CD player in the mid-80's. I was only in my single digits, and music was becoming increasingly vital to my upbringing. This CD brought forth so much of my imagination and caused me to discover more and more eclectic titles. I haven't heard this CD in several years, but as I listened to the previews, I couldn't believe that I was humming to them in perfect notation. Highly recommended if you just want to sit back, close your eyes, and seemingly float above your chair.

It has been a while...

I found I had to download this after hearing about 2 bars of it one morning and not being able to get it out of my head. I haven't heard this CD in 15 years, but still remember it perfectly. Like most have said, I remember sitting on the floor at my parents' house listening to this with my eyes closed, imagining away. After all these years, this music still evokes the same emotions it did when I was a small child. Simply amazing.

Though he's one of the most influential artists in "new age pop" and adult alternative circles, Lynch has extensive formal music training. Inspired by Andres Segovia's classical guitar recordings, Lynch studied the instrument in Barcelona, Spain, in the early '60s. He later attended the University of Texas as a composition student. Toward the end of the decade, Lynch moved to New York and became a fixture in the city's "early music" scene as a lutenist with Renaissance Quartette. A period of personal...
