Album Review

Dutch DJ and trance master Armin van Buuren created his sixth A State of Trance in 2009, featuring a two-disc collection of some of the best, and rarest, trance smashes that flooded the club scene in 2009: Neptune Project, Phuture Sound, and Monogato all stand out as some of van Buuren's best-mixed pieces, and helped solidify this collection as a great source piece for the strongest trance tunes of 2009.

Fantastic Compilation! There's a reason why Armin is #1!

WOW! This compilation again shows off Armin's superiority in mixing and creating an amazing journey. I can tell Armin spent alot of time in the song selection as well as the order of the songs. Anyone can create a playlist and put a bunch of songs together. But very few DJs can create a journey through the songs and take you through the emotions. Given that Armin is ranked #1 in the world by DJMag, I have high expectations for his work. Armin has impressed me convincingly again. The first part of the compilation (or the first CD) is called "On The Beach" mainly because it's meant to create a theme that encompasses one with a feeling of being on the beach. It is also my favorite part of the ASOT compilations. Immediately with the intro, Armin creates a beach-like mood. The tunes in the first part are more chilled out and have a lower BPM (beats per minute) resulting in a soothing array of trance. In my opinion, the song "Never Fade Away" by John O'Callaghan was the perfect choice to start off the On The Beach part. The flow and transition between the songs is phenomenal and unbelievably smooth. The vocal trance tunes have gorgeous, uplifting vocals as one can expect in any ASOT compilation by Armin. Armin selected the tunes in such a way in order to create an equal balance of vocal trance (trance tunes with vocals) and trance tunes in this first part. On The Beach starts with a beautiful vocal with "Never Fade Away" and flows perfectly into "Change Your Mind" by Sunlounger (aka Roger Shah), another terrific vocal song. Armin then transitions the set into several consecutive and exotic trance tunes with no vocals from "Paradise Lost" through "Miami Vibe". The exquisite melody of these tunes is calming to the ears while the beats will get you moving. The compilaton then alternates back to vocal tunes with "Deep Down" and continues for the rest of the On The Beach set. Armin chose the very popular vocal "Man On The Run" with the remix by Nic Chagall to end On The Beach, and while I have heard this song numerous times on Armin's radio show to the point that I got began to feel annoyed with it, I felt it was a great choice to end this first part of ASOT 2009. The second part of the compilation is "In The Club" which involves, as many would guess, a set of harder, upbeat trance tunes with a faster BPM which creates an experience similar to the atmosphere of a dance club... or even a chair-raving experience at your own desk! Armin starts off with a Cosmic Gate remix of John O'Callaghan's "Find Yourself" which is a vocal trance tune with the beautiful, vocals of Sarah Howells from the UK. The music then shifts to a harder style with "Inside Of You" with the remix again by Cosmic Gate. The phenomenal tune "Tuvan" by Gaia (aka Armin) gives me goosebumps every time... it is my favorite tune BY FAR on ASOT 2009. Gaia is an alias used by Armin. He also created "4 Elements" under the Gaia alia. If there was one song to buy from ASOT 2009, "Tuvan" would be it. Armin continues the In The Club atmosphere with the popular club favorite "Aztec" by Neptune Project that incorporates a wonderful instrumental melody that will give you chills. The last three tracks of In The Club were sorted perfectly as you get a "sense" that Armin is nearing the end of the set and provides a climatic end with a very upbeat "Monsun" by 3rd Moon. Overall, trance fans, and even fans of any style of dance music, will love this compilation and appreciate the hard work and planning Armin put into ASOT 2009. This compilation integrates the theme of a beach party with the lively atmosphere of a club. Please note these songs are meant to be heard consecutively in a mix & not individually! The songs sound so much better when played in the mix. To sum it all up... the mixing is amazing and the selection is well thought out & genius. It is the perfect compilation for this summer and any summer for that matter. In my opinion, ASOT 2009 is my favorite in the ASOT series... ahead of ASOT 2007 (2nd fav) & ASOT 2008 (3rd fav). I HIGHLY RECOMMEND buying ASOT 2009!

Whenever Armin rushes his releases...they end up sucking

Wow, this is a huge disappointment. I loved ASOT '05, '06 was my favorite, and '08 was fantastic. But this is basically a big advertisement for Armada. There are NO underground tracks that belong to another label on this compilation. This is all extremely generic crap. Disc 2 consists of cheesy build ups and you will feel empty when the beat "drops" after the breakdown. Armin can do better. I use to have all of my faith that all of his compilations would be 10/10 but after ASOT '07 I started getting skeptical of what he selects on these CDs. You can do better Armin. Don't waste $15.99 on this, which only offers edits and FULL SETS? C'mon now. '08 was the entire mix CD, that's how it should be sold. Go spend your money on "Never Fade Away", O'Callaghan's new album.

Prefer to buy it on CD

Grrrr.. It makes me mad that Armada releases this as a download before the physical release of the CD. People need to listen too quality and buy the CD, play it on a stereo where the music has more depth and feeling. Digital downloads ruins the depth of music, Technology ruined the quality of music.
