One of the Best Soundtracks of 2008

James Newton Howard has done it again. This is one of his best film scores. It is brooding, moving, and beautiful. He keeps proving himself to be one of the greatest film score composers ever. He has been overlooked by the Academy for a while and this is his year. He should win for either Defiance or The Dark Knight. Also, it frustrates me that iTunes didn't put this on the front page of the Soundtrack section and it wasn't shown in the New Releases section either. To find it I had to look at JNH's artist page.

Nothing Less Than Perfect

The movie was a phenominal and breathtaking display of hope, drama and the loss so many had to feel during this time in Germany. The soundtrack itself, only amplifies the effects of the movie. This movie's heart and soul is not easily kept without this score. Especialy the Main Titles, when I first saw the movie, the video clips along with this song almost cut me with it's beauty. I think this movie did some very well earned Justice to what the survivors endured, and some who did not live to see it. Some parts of the movie surprised me, others gave me a sense of happines, like the wedding scene. All in all, James Howard and Joshua Bell have created a Masterpiece.

Good, but not Best

JNH's score to Defiance is kind of a combination between Schindler's List, Blood Diamond, and Hans Zimmer. It uses a violin to tell a story during the Halocaust (although I don't think the film is directly about it, just during that era... not really sure), the chord progressions are similar to that of Blood Diamond (and The Village for that matter), but unlike Blood Diamond (and like Zimmer), it uses an electronic beat during the action sequences. Overall, the album is enjoyable, but it really is just a lesser version of what JNH has done in the past- if you don't have the Blood Diamond sountrack, I'd buy that over this. The best track is by far "Nothing Is Impossible", simply because it incorparates almost all of the themes- so if you'd like to buy something from this album, definately buy that track. Other then that- one of the better scores of 2008, and if you want to hear what Schindler's List would sound like if JNH had composed it- then buy this album. If not, I'd still reccomend buying "Nothing Is Impossible"
