The second album from Long Island quartet Brand New is a brooding high-water mark for emo rock. In fact, Deja Entendu finds frontman Jesse Lacey at his most self-scouring. Standout “Sic Transit Gloria … Glory Fades” and the watery groove of “Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don’t” hinge on dynamic, cascading arrangements, while the acoustic backing of “The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot” and closer “Play Crack the Sky” reveals the bruised heart behind all the adrenaline-fueled bluster.
