iTunes Editors’ Notes

Johnny Cash had been without a record deal for several years when rap/rock producer Rick Rubin revived his career by focusing the spotlight solely on Cash's minimal guitar accompaniment and his commanding, chiseled-in-granite vocals. Rubin and Cash also cherry-picked an astonishing range of material from such unlikely sources as Glenn Danzig ("Thirteen"), Tom Waits ("Down There By The Train"), Leonard Cohen ("Bird On A Wire"), Loudon Wainwright III ("The Man Who Wouldn't Cry") and Nick Lowe ("The Beast In Me"), all of which rest comfortably alongside a fistful of Cash originals and traditional tunes. With subjects stretching from horses ("Tennessee Stud") and travel ("Let The Train Blow The Whistle"), to God ("Redemption" and "Oh Bury Me Not") and murder ("Delia's Gone"), this album is as timeless as a Matthew Brady photograph from the Civil War.

Pure Johnny & his guitar

The world changed when this "Man in Black" left us. Now he wears white and his music lives on. "American Recordings" allows us to hear Johnny and his guitar - how it should be. Although most of the songs are not well-known, Johnny makes them memorable. This is a have-to-have for any seasoned fan as well as someone who is new to this American Legend.

Sitting With Johnny

Listening to this album is like sitting with Mr Cash and his guitar, singing in the fire light of my living room -- and it's late at night, with a stirring feeling, together remembering solitary journies and reconnections to God. The older I get the more Mr Cash's voice and words echo with strong wisdom for me. Like alot of folks, just Cash and his guitar alone make it for me. Thank you, Johnny, for coming over and for these last solo recordings you left for us all.

An Honest Record...

The stripped down style of this record showed how much of that J.R was still left in his soul. An honest and deep voice accompanied by an acoustic guitar that makes you think in those lonesome times of your life... a record to think, enjoy, laugh and be lonely. A kind of truth is heard from Johnny's voice that very few had immerse within it... Just listen...

Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound. Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world-weariness of country. Cash's career coincided with the birth of rock &...
