Killmatic

Killmatic

A longstanding underground supergroup that includes Apathy, Celph Titled, Ryu, Esoteric, Motive, and Blacastan, Demigodz have been unleashing their unique blend of extra-grimy hip-hop for a while now; their debut EP, The Godz Must Be Crazy, dropped in 2002. Killmatic is their long-awaited first full-length, and they get nice assists from DJ Premier (who produces "Worst Nightmare"), as well as Termanology, R.A. The Rugged Man, Planetary, Panchi, Scoop DeVille, and Eternia. Relentlessly hardcore yet maintaining a nice mix of gutter street realities and off-kilter humor, their thuggish but still funky sound is comparable to likeminded acts such as Army of the Pharaohs and Non Phixion. Apathy deftly handles the sample-centric production on most tracks, though Marco Polo, Will C, The Snow Goons, and Chumzilla also impress. Most everything on here is great, but the Rocky-flipping "Demigodz Is Back," the DOOM-esque "Dead in the Middle," and the organ-propelled "The Fallen Angels" are highlights.
