iTunes Review

In place of the soft R&B-pop that typified their sound for so many years, Avalon adopt a heavier, more rock-oriented approach here, and to impressive effect. Weathering the departure of longtime member Jody McBrayer, the group seizes the chance to start over by delivering passionate performances emphasizing their trademark harmony sound. Stalwart fans will appreciate the unadulterated God-centered messages of songs like “Angels,” “Alive,” “Arise” and the title tune. Acoustic guitar and piano gives “California” a folk-pop feel, offering contrast to the muscular rock punch of “Holy”. With her customary mixture of forcefulness and grace, founding member Janna Long shines on the power ballad “Destined.” A good deal of credit here goes to producers Ian Eskelin and Barry Weeks, who draw upon their experiences in the studio with Stellar Kart and Krystal Meyers to give these tracks an aggressive, distinctly modern edge. All told, Avalon hasn’t sounded this vigorous or musically challenged in a long time. Rebirth is truly what this album is all about.

A brand new sound for Avalon

I have been a huge supporter of Avalon since their inception. Upon hearing of Melissa Greene's departure from the group, I was very worried considering she was such a powerhouse vocalist and held so many key parts in their songs. Reborn is definitely different than Avalon's previous releases. Maybe my reasoning for being so skeptical of this record is due to the fact that it is so different than the sound they have produced in years past. I do not NOT like this record at all. In fact, I love the tracks: Alive, Angels, and Holy. The harmonies are intricately blended and the mixes on all of the tracks are awesome, yet depart from some of Avalon's previous vocally driven harmonies and focus more on the instrumentation and synthesization. I kind of feel like once I listen to this album a few more times, I will like it more, but I think now I am just in shock of the "new" sound that they produced on this record. But I have, and always will be a huge supporter of Avalon!

I have been an AVALON fan since the very beginning...I have been loyal to them throughout all the changes in members and sound. But I have to say...they lost me on this one. I don't even think they should be allowed to be called Avalon anymore...only one original member remains. Plus...with yet another change to their sound...they lost a die hard fan. Jody McBrayer you are deeply missed. If you want Avalon download the old stuff -- you will be moved and blessed.

Avalon is back! I am happy to report to you that I have ALREADY worn out every track on this CD! I must say that this is one of the strongest re-boot efforts by a long-running Christian artist I have ever heard.

Standout tracks are "Reborn", "Alive", "Destined", and "California." Also, deserving mention on its own is the song "Stay", which is perhaps one of the strongest songs of Avalon's career in terms of the message and vocal delivery on the part of Greg Long.

5 STARS! An EXCELLENT album...easily the best they've ever produced!

The CCM vocal quartet Avalon includes Jody McBrayer, Nikki Hassman, Janna Potter and Michael Passons. After debuting with a self-titled album in 1996, the group toured with Michael W. Smith, Twila Paris and Steven Curtis Chapman. The singles "Give It Up," "This Love" and "Picture Perfect World" all did well on the inspirational/adult contemporary charts, sparking the group's second album, 1997's A Maze of Grace. Hassman left the group and was replaced by Cherie Paliotta before Avalon returned to...
