Can't believe they're unsigned

these guys are local to Kent, OH near Cleveland. It's hard to believe they're unsigned because they have a really unique sound. Highlights on the album include Handbook for the Recently Deceased, Come On In, The Pygmalion Effect, and A Sleepwalking Atheist. if you're looking for a different metal sound check these guys out!

Wow, something different for a change!

In a music scene filled with either the most predictable breakdowns, overdone androgynous vocals, and corny pop hooks, Amplexus is seriously, and I mean seriously DIFFERENT. I saw their profile in AP a while back and after many listens, I still can't put my finger on them. They just mix so many elements together perfectly. It's like Sevendust made an R&B hybrid child with early Thrice. Crazy! Oh, and just to note... from the looks of their promo pics, they are about the only band these days not concerned with image over substance (i.e. don't swoop their bangs and wear girl jeans). Crazy again! Can't wait for them to come to St. Louis and then take over the world! Now go spin that DJ!

The unsigned secret

Amplexus is an energetic name and their sound surely fits. A cross breed of EMOtional metal and carefully written hardcore with an unforgettable rhythm section, Amplexus rides a fine line that few artists have been able to pull off. "The Handbook For The Recently Deceased" should jar anyone who's seen the movie Beetlejuice", and their memory. By far the most radio friendly, this song has a fantastic acoustic intro that softly entices interest. Quickly a blitzing and rhythmic verse attacks. The chorus will eventually morph the two, and lead to a unique bridge of hardcore vocals and instrumentation. The first track "Come On In" introduces you to the melting pot of their sound. Heart-thumping double bass drums, stop and start rhythm and bass guitars section. Mind numbing fretting of the lead guitars. All the while lead singer Mahlon tastefully ropes everything together with manly wail, yet subtle speech, a.k.a. Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle, Tapeworm) and Lajon Witherspoon (Sevendust). Based on the shear development of their own likes and dislikes as music listeners, they've recorded a remarkable debut effort that does infact resolve a tangled plot. You don't need a label to record mature and professional material! This is a MUST HAVE ON RADAR for the fans of Evans Blue, Alexisonfire, and Sevendust
