iTunes Review

Overkill had assimilated multiple styles of metal into its sound over the years, but thrash was its native territory. The band returns to that land at the start of its 14th studio album, Immortalis. Bolstered by the guitars of Dave Linsk and Derek Tailer and the lightning-fast double-bass drumming of new recruit Ron Lipnicki, “Devils in the Mist,” “What It Takes," and “Skull and Bones” form a master class in thrash dynamics. These tunes have it all: abrupt rhythms, quick guitar breaks, cathartic solos. Other groups do that too, but Overkill simply does it with more aggression and creativity than its rivals. Even when the band delves into the thicker, thrusting grooves of “Hellish Pride,” “Head On," and “Chalie Get Your Gun,” there's something unique about this group’s singleminded devotion to pure ferocity. And while many metal bands eventually devolve into parody, with unintelligible vocals and muddied rhythms, Overkill always comes off like a rock band in the classic mode, especially on the brilliant “Walk Through Fire.”

Hey iTunes, how 'bout the studio album?

Old faithful

Can't go wrong with Bobby B and the boys. Sounds good, unlike most live albums. Overkill!

Solid album

After Overkill's critically acclaimed came out after this album I feel like this album is overlooked a lot.

It's certainly one of Overkill's best albums since Horrorscope and has some great, catchy, down-tuned thrashy riffs.

My favorite songs would have to be Devils In The Mist, Hellish Pride, and Hell Is.

Formed: 1980 in Old Bridge Township, NJ

Genre: Metal

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

New Jersey thrash quartet Overkill were formed in 1980 by vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth and guitarist Bobby Gustafson, and also included bassist D.D. Verni and drummer Rat Skates (later replaced by Sid Falck). The band garnered a reputation for brutal, pounding speed and technique, but lacked the musical diversity to compete with heavy hitters like Metallica; still, Overkill built up a strong following in the metal underground with albums like 1985's Taking Over and 1988's Under the Influence....
