Dharma Blues

Dharma Blues

GRAMMY Award®–winning producer John Chelew encouraged Peter Rowan to add yet another accomplishment to his extensive career after hearing the new songs Rowan had written in India and Japan that had yet to find an album. The two united at Plant Studios in Sausalito, Calif., where they began work that eventually expanded to Los Angeles and New Orleans and included guest appearances from Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna) and Gillian Welch, along with the pedal steel work of Dave Easley and the banjo and tamboura of Jody Stetcher, who’d recorded with Jerry Jeff Walker and David Bromberg. Here, Rowan captures a spiritual dimension with the modal approach of the title track and the spoken/sung mystery of “My Love Will Never Change.” He has remained a cult favorite among acoustic guitar aficionados. Dharma Blues is loaded with performances (“Wisdom Woman,” “Vulture Peak,” “Who Will Live,” “Snow Country Girl”) that should connect to fans of the Americana/alt.country genre—and beyond.
