Editors’ Notes

Before bass player Chi Cheng’s 2008 car accident left him comatose, Deftones were working on an album titled Eros. But the band didn’t feel right forging ahead without Cheng, so they shelved Eros and waited patiently before finally deciding to work on a different project with Sergio Vega, former bassist of the post-hardcore band Quicksand. Diamond Eyes was recorded with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, Stone Sour) who helped give Deftones’ sixth album a much more atmospheric sound than 2006’s Saturday Night Wrist. “Royal” leans on dark Sabbathy sludge and a pummeling rhythm section, but singer Chino Moreno contrasts his blistering screams with breathy crooning. Moreno’s lyrical matter detours from negative themes and cathartic complaints on Diamond Eyes — he even stated in an interview that Cheng’s accident brought the band closer together, giving the album a “positive zest for life.” Standout track “Rocket Skates” best exemplifies this with imagery similar to “Knife Party” from 2000’s White Pony.

Customer Reviews

Finally arrived!!!

This album feels like a blend of every other album they've recorded. Sex tape could have been taken straight from the white pony vault. You can really hear the depeche mode influence on chino in ghosts. This album still hits heavy through it's majority. Chino is one of the few front men that can scream and sing and make it all blend together. Buy the deluxe version. Worth it!

Deftones Never Fail to Impress!

This album, is absolutely undescribable! It's unique, it's experimental, it's face-smashing, it's DEFTONES!!! Diamond Eyes absolutely doesn't fail to impress one bit. To date, it is one of the most historic Deftones albums of all time. I don't know what else to say, other than after four long years, the Deftones are back and in your face! There's no telling what more amazing works of art they will release!

A Welcome Return To Form

I honestly can't say that there is a single track on here that I didn't enjoy. Diamond Eyes mixes expirimental rock with the best qualities of alternative metal and nu-metal which makes for one of the most satisfying albums of 2010. I can guarantee that when I look back ten years from now and think: "Which albums defined the 2010's?" this will be one of them.

Deftones were one of the first groups to alternate heavy riffs and screamed vocals with more ethereal music and hushed singing — spawning a fair amount of imitators in their wake. The group first formed in Sacramento, California during 1988, when then high-school students Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums), and Chino Moreno (vocals) first began to jam together. They chose the name Deftones and began playing...
