iTunes Review

The Chic braintrust of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards were en fuego with their own hits and those they'd written and produced for Sister Sledge when they got the call to aid one of Motown's biggest superstars. Their response was Diana, by far the best and sauciest of Miss Ross' solo albums. Challenging her with stripped-down rhythm tracks and witty, astute lyrics of a type not always found on her post-Supremes discs, it quite simply rocked. Rodgers' guitar was even more sizzling than on his band's own records, and Ross met the challenge with clipped vocals that showed how much she got it.

Deluxe Indeed

The reissue of "Diana" includes both the original release of the album as well as the unreleased Chic mixes. The original mixes are much crisper and cleaner than the thicker-sounding Motown mixes. The Chic versions also feature alternate takes of both Ross' vocals and instrumentalists which are more rhythmic and improvisational than those initially released. Listeners will find much enjoyment comparing the two versions of the album. As if that weren't already enough to qualify this as a "Deluxe" edition there is also a CD's worth of Ross' best dance mixes from the era - some of which had not been previously offered commercially.

Definitely Worth The $

If anything it's worth it just for the Love Hangover (Extended Alternate Version). This is wayy better than the other versions that I've heard. I like the Original CHIC mixes as well. I haven't stopped listening to this yet..

Lovin, Livin, Givin

is a great track but it wasn't a B side. It was an A side, from the "Thank God it's Friday" movie soundtrack. At the time, measuring BPMs (beats per minute) was a big deal and "Lovin" supposedly had the most BPMs on the soundtrack. There are several different mixes of the song, on this album, the U.S. and U.K. singles, and the version on the 1978 album "Ross."

As a solo artist, Diana Ross is one of the most successful female singers of the rock era. If you factor in her work as the lead singer of the Supremes in the 1960s, she may be the most successful. With her friends Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, and Barbara Martin, Ross formed the Primettes vocal quartet in 1959. In 1960, they were signed to local Motown Records, changing their name to the Supremes in 1961. Martin then left, and the group continued as a trio. Over the next eight years, the Supremes...
