Editors’ Notes

British electronic producer/DJ Simon Green, a.k.a. Bonobo, is known for subtly textured, atmospheric work; aesthetically speaking, he's in an ideal position to take the nocturnal theme of Late Night Tales to heart. His installment in the mix series shows both his knack for setting a sophisticated, sultry mood and the breadth of his own musical tastes. While you'll find a few of his fellow travelers from the electronic world here (Lapalux, Shlohmo), the wee-hours mood Bonobo sets is as eclectic as it is seamlessly structured to maintain a meditative feel. There's jazz both classic (piano giant Bill Evans' "Peace Piece," harpist Dorothy Ashby's verdant, swinging "Essence of Sapphire") and modern (trip-hop-meets-post-bop trio Badbadnotgood's "Hedron"). Cutting-edge indie pop (Eddi Front, Peter & Kerry) rubs shoulders with the modernistic chamber music of composers like Matthew Bourne and Dustin O'Halloran, and somehow our able curator stitches it all into something simultaneously calming and compelling while making it all seem of a piece.

Customer Reviews

To the one-star reviewer

Leaving a one star review before listening to any of the album is unfair to the artist. You've obviously never heard any of the late night tales series. The spoken word at the end of the mix is a hallmark of the series and does not reflect the rest of the mix, which is all music. I can't comment on the quality of this mix, but knowing Bobobo I can expect it's going to be beautiful. I'm leaving this 5 stars to hopefully counteract any damage you may have done to the rating of this album.

Jazzy and soulful. Great album to work to. I’ve had it on repeat for a couple days now and it only gets better with each listen.

With the experimental warmth of '60s French films and the pizzicato flavor of horizontal hip-hop, Simon Green's Bonobo project established the welcome niche of a pretension-free, post-party intellectual chillout upon the release of his full-length debut in 2000. Since then, his sound and scope have expanded dramatically, with his sophisticated compositions and arrangements incorporating live instrumentation and encompassing influences ranging from jazz, house, folk, and soul to African, Asian, and...
