Album Review

Amy Helm has American music in her blood; her father, Levon Helm, was the drummer and sometimes lead singer for the iconic roots rock group the Band, and her mother Libby Titus was a singer and composer whose tunes have been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, and Carly Simon. After recording four albums with her band Ollabelle, working with her father on his critically acclaimed comeback albums Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt, touring as part of Levon's road band, and popping up on sessions with artists as diverse as Rosanne Cash and Mercury Rev, Amy Helm takes the spotlight on her first solo album, 2015's Didn't It Rain. Fusing rock with blues and gospel flavors, the album features three songs Amy Helm recorded with her father on drums before his death in 2012.

Perfectly honest!

Amy's voice has a way of cutting straight to the truth. She no longer stands in the shadow of her father's legacy. She has worked hard for this and on her own two feet she will bask in the glow of this glorious album. One of the best of the year. If all stars align I could see a grammy in Amy's future. Some of the best song-writng in modern music. Roll Away, Rescue Me and Roll the stone are perfection.

This is a must buy

Amy’s vocal work on this is album is outstanding. The raw emotion in her voice is reminiscent of Linda Ronstadt in her prime. A great collection of songs that crosses genera boundaries as the sections are a little bit of country, folk, rock, blues all mixed wonderfully together. Production work really does a great job of highlighting the instrumentals to really set the tone for each song but in every case it’s Amy’s clean voice that brings the emotion home. If this album gets to the right ears I expect we are going to hear much more from Ms. Helm.

Over the top good

Been hoping patiently for Ollabelle to re-emerge in earnest after Levon's passing since Amy's outstanding writing and soulful singing has always been in such rarified air. God I miss their Banjo Jim's magic! This album delivers in spades. Put her in your car's deck and and enjoy the summer. Cant say enough about how supremely tasteful this music is.
